"Postmodern media manipulates time and space". To what extent does this definition apply to texts you have studied?

Postmodernism is the rejection  modernism and it defies definition. Modernism offered truth improvement, hierarchy and order which is why post modernism is the rejection of modernism as it rejects the truth and order. It rejects all Grand Narratives, or example it rejects the theory that God created the world, and the idea of the big bang. For postmodernism to exist, industrialisation created the possibility for PoMo to exist because everything became the same afterwards, it was all identical.

Postmodernism is used heavily throughout the film Django Unchained which was created in 2012 by Quentin Tarintino. There is an element of pastiche used in the film from the scene where 'Mississippi' in bold white words floats across the scene to show the audience where they supposedly are. This was taken from Gone With The Wind, an American Western film from 1939. In this scene he has discretely complained about the film industry and the way that they are doing things, especially the way that the American film industry portray the American West type of films and slavery. This shows that this is a postmodern movie as they have travelled time to take conventions from another movie to add these conventions into their own film which shows that it is postmodern. Pastiche is also used in this film for the scene when the group of American ranch owners and their workers act as the 'KKK', as this has been taken from the film A Birth of A Nation (1915), it is mocking the scene from the film where the characters act as KKK during a scene in the film. This again has seen the idea taken from another film that is a 100 years old, which shows that postmodernism travels through time as this was a film from the past which has still influenced scenes for films in today's time. They did originally pay homage to the Original Django film, which was produced by Sergio Corbucci in 1966. The reason they paid homage was because they have taken the idea from the original Django for the whole concept of the film Django Unchanied. In my opinion they have used this as the basis of the film and taking ideas from other films to add to the basis of this film. This has been passed through time and used for films that are being created today, which again shows how postmodernism manipulates time.

Vampire Weekend are a band who are very postmodern due to the way they create their music such as sampling other songs in their own, and their inspiration from other genres other than their own. This is seen in Vampire Weekend's song 'Giving Up The Gun', where they have used Bricolage to take samples from Radiohead's song 'Let Down' (1997). This is an example of postmodern manipulating time and space due to the fact that this song and the artist who created it are from a different genre, which shows that they aren't in the same space as it is a different genre, and this song was also from a different time period, around 10 years before Vampire Weekend's song. They have also paid homage to Paul Simon and his African style of music that he creates himself. More specifically, it is evident they have been heavily influenced and paid homage to Paul Simon's album 'The Rhythm of The Sains' (1990), which was written and produced by Paul Simon. This is more evidence of the way that postmodern media manipulating time and space due to the fact that this music is a completely different genre so it has a different meaning to what it would have had in that genre, and this is music from 20/30 years ago. Bands such as the Gorillaz use simulacrum to create an 'unreal' band even though behind the characters it is played by real people. They use animated characters to portray the band, and use holograms for live performances. This simulacrum used has shown how postmodernism has manipulated time and space as this hasn't been done before, and it is playing with the concept that we don't know what is real anymore, as everyone would assume these are a normal band /artists until they would have seen the band 'perform'.

(TV Paragraph)

Overall I feel as though due to postmodernism, in the future there will be many cases of different artists / directors etc. who have been sued for sampling other music due to the fact that they will be claiming every style has been taken by someone else. For example Robin Thicke and Pharell have recently been sued for sampling other music on their song 'Blurred Lines', and this just shows that it is the start of many different cases where artists are sued for sampling other music.

From the songs that have been chosen, it suggests that I have a similar genres of music that appeal to me however I do have some variations. There are a couple of songs in my playlist that I am slightly embarrassed by or do not like at all. The Vaccines - We are Never Getting Back Together is one song that I am slightly embarrassed by, and this is due to the fact that it isn't the greatest cover of a song. A song that I dislike from my playlist is one by Kasabian, and the reasoning for this is that I am not the biggest fan of the band. A guilty pleasure of a song is Blondie - Heart of Glass, I am not the greatest fan of this band but I like this song a lot.
